 SPECIAL ART NEWS:

Katelyn Swanson is the winner of the 2013 ADM Art Award.  Congratulations, Katelyn.

Ten delegates from ADM attended the Raccoon River Conference Art Show and Competition at Bondurant Farrar High School April 24th.  The Conference Art Show/Competition had 800 pieces of the best art from the whole conference in competition.  As a part of our day, our host school provided buses to the Des Moines Art Center where we toured both the gallery and their studios.  We enjoyed eating lunch in the outdoor park near the center and took time to pose in the “egg” on the Art Center grounds.

ADM placed first in the “Commercial Art (computer generated)” division with Gracie Chapman’s 24 x 36 West End Salvage Banner.  Gracie used one of the photos she had taken while our Design and Junior Senior Art Studio Classes toured West End in March.  Third place was awarded to Katelyn Swanson for her watercolor “Corner of Freedom” and Third place to Alyssa McMahon for her tempera painting entitled “Date Night”.  Five Honorable Mention’s were award for Katelyn Swanson’s watercolor “Creation Flower”, Monika Wiley’s graphite drawing “Harry the Duck”, Aaron Highberg’s graphite drawing “Bouquet of Pencil Shavings”, Dajana Dulic’s digital photography named “Running Through the Field” and Kimberly Wilderdyke’s Sculpture named “Once Upon a Time”.   I was proud of the hard work that was evident in every piece that our ADM students presented.  I was also very proud of our delegates that represented our school wonderfully everywhere we went.

The ADM Art Show in the high school commons was April 26th at 6:00 – 7:30 PM before the Band and Choir Spring Concert.  This event showcased the work of each of the art classes offered at the ADM High School.

This year’s décor theme for the art show came from our tour of West End Salvage, “Honor the Past Embrace the Future”.  I want to thank and acknowledge all those who helped set up and take down the art display.  Mr. Asche printed the banners, and supervised the antiquing of the bookcase which displayed some of our 3-D art. Rev. Wally Shea built 4 more large easels to display even more of our matted work for this and future art shows.  Many others loaned us items to help make the theme a reality.

Huge thank you to our art show tear down crew Mallory Pierce, Sydney Denman, Jess Enterline, Meg Perkins, Kimberly Corkrean, Destiny Waage, Emily Winter, Taylor Telford and Kendyl Irwin.  Thank you also for Austin Enterline, who volunteered to help even though he is not a current art student. On March 4th, the Design Class and the Jr. Sr. Art Studio Class went to HyVee Corporate (Marketing / Advertising),  West End Architectural Salvage Company (where we took photos and drew sketches and talked to designer/owner Don Short from the new HGTV show called West End Salvage and finally we went to Sundog Studio for a tour of their marketing photography. It was very informative and fun day.

Ceramics:

There are lots of great ideas on this site for ceramics.  You can see articles and videos without subscribing: http://www.ceramicartsdaily.org. Enjoy!

For functional pottery (pottery that serves a purpose other than decorative) it is important to have good handles.

Excellent video by Sandi Pierantozzi, showing how to get the pulled handle look, but with a much easier technique.

If you want to use the traditional method, this video may be helpful.  This method takes practice so it is a good idea to make several handles before applying one onto your pottery.
